Headlines newsletter
Welcome to Headlines, a new termly newsletter from the North East Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) developed for Secondary Head Teachers and Principals.
Headlines is offered as part of the North East LEP’s North East Ambition programme, which aims to raise the career aspirations of each and every young person in the North East and to help them reach their full potential. We do this by supporting schools to meet their statutory duties for careers education and guidance and to meet the Gatsby Benchmarks.
Headlines will provide:
- A Horizon Scan of recent news, policy developments and research relevant to the careers landscape, including Ofsted and destination measures.
- Head to Head - an example of good practice from within the region, from a head teacher’s perspective.
- A Focus on… particular areas of work where the North East LEP can offer free expertise, support and resources for schools, to assist in achieving and maintaining the Gatsby Benchmarks and demonstrating the impact of this important work.
Careers education and guidance has featured significantly in recent parliamentary activity.
The Skills for Jobs White Paper (enacted through the Skills and Post-16 Education Act) and the Schools White Paper - Opportunity for All, highlight its importance.
It also has a high profile in a House of Lords Youth Unemployment Committee report, Skills for every young person.
Education Select Committee inquiry
An Education Select Committee inquiry is reviewing the effectiveness of careers advice to students, while a Private Members Bill - extending the duty to provide careers guidance in schools to Year 7 pupils and bringing the provision of careers guidance in academies in line with other institutions - received royal assent in March. This section presents the experiences of a local head teacher or principal, providing an insight into what is happening in their school and why, and the impact it is having.
In this edition, we meet Seaham High School head teacher Mr Geoff Lumsdon, and Career Leader Chris Harbron, who explain why the school has chosen to implement a school-wide approach to careers education with the full support of the head teacher.

Our Economy 2022
On Tuesday 15 November, the North East Local Enterprise Partnership will host its annual Our Economy event at Crowne Plaza Newcastle. This year’s event will focus on how the economic gains in the North East from 2014-2020 have been impacted by recent economic shocks, and the prospects for prosperity for the region’s business and residents.
Kitty Ussher, Chief Economist at The Institute of Directors; Mohammed Jamei, Director of Economic Projects at the CBI; and Mike Brewer, Deputy Chief Executive of the Resolution Foundation; will join Richard Baker, Strategy and Policy Director at the North East LEP, to discuss living standards in the region and the trends for incomes, wealth and poverty for residents; and how the environment for business is changing and what the prospects are for investment, business growth and employment.
A series of in depth, expert panel discussions will take place following the main Our Economy event to explore some of the themes and issues raised. Topics include evidence and data; business – discussing what the evidence means in practice; people – the implications of the cost of living on people and communities; and emerging markets.
Our Economy 2022 and the expert panel discussions are both free to attend. Tickets can be booked by visiting the eventbrite page.
