A Focus On…Labour Market Information
A recent research report, Disconnected: Career aspirations and jobs in the UK, shows that there is still a disconnect between young people’s aspirations and the labour market and that this has long term implications for young people, employers and the economy.
To help address this disconnect, the North East Ambition team has a series of free LMI resources that can be readily incorporated into lessons to explain what LMI is and the exciting opportunities available for young people in the North East. We can also support the upskilling of curriculum staff about LMI and involving employers to enhance curriculum delivery and make it even more relevant and engaging for students. We’ve created a toolkit of resources and examples that will help careers leaders and teachers to understand the labour market and integrate it into their lesson planning. You can view the toolkit here.
The North East LEP also supports schools to take account of LMI for curriculum planning. This is particularly relevant within post-16 provision where an understanding of growth areas in the economy can lead to better destinations for young people. The North East Evidence Hub is part of the LEP’s commitment to providing up-to-date economic data and commentary. It includes labour market statistics, destination information and skills data along with recent research and publications. The data is available to download, export and compare. Please have a browse – and do let us know if there are specific additions you would find of value.
For a fuller picture of the North East’s labour market, Our Economy 2021 is our annual update on the current performance of the economy in the North East LEP area and provides an overview of how it is changing over time. It includes an update on progress towards the North East LEP’s aim of bringing 100,000 more and better jobs to the region by 2024 and analysis of the impact on the North East of emerging policy priorities, like levelling up and decarbonisation.
And finally, Victoria Sutherland, Head of Evidence at the What Works Centre for Local Economic Growth, was one of the keynote speakers at the launch of National Careers Week 2022. Here, she gives an insight into how labour market information can inform careers guidance for children and young people.
