North East LEP supports Inspiring Governance school / college governor recruitment drive

Inspiring Governance – the organisation that connects skilled volunteers who are interested in serving as school governors and trustees with schools in England – is celebrating a major milestone after appointing 5000+ governors.

The North East LEP is a proud partner of Inspiring Governance and was the first LEP in the country to sign the School Governor Champion Charter, pledging our support to champion the role of school governor and support staff members to become governors in local schools.

Inspiring Governance is now focused on reaching the next 5,000 governor appointments and we’d like your help in reaching that target.

Here’s why you should consider supporting schools and becoming a governor.

The remit of a school or college governor is a strategic one and a great opportunity to gain experience of operating at board level. It will test all your skills of judgement so that you make the best decisions in the interests of children.

Anybody over 18 can be a governor and you don’t have to be a parent. In fact, 250,000 people are already governors, yet there remain national shortages and many schools throughout the North East would welcome the skills people in our region could bring, such as:

·      The ability to challenge, ask questions, and seek solutions

·      Strategic leadership, planning, and project management

·      An analytical approach, digital skills and employability expertise

·      Being collaborative and working as a team to achieve a common goal

The role would take no more than about 5-8 hours of your time each month and usually fits around a typical day-to-day role.

The benefits are not only professional: becoming part of a governing board provides an opportunity to make schools and colleges better for everyone, to support your local community, and to play a part in making a positive impact on the employability of the next generation – essential now more than ever.
