While the term “link governor” isn’t defined in legislation, it’s commonly used in schools to describe a governor who takes a focused interest in a specific aspect of school life and may assume related responsibilities.
The Department for Education offers helpful guidance on the role within its materials on governance structures and responsibilities. According to the DfE:
- “The role of a link governor is to ensure that someone has specific oversight of a particular area and to deepen the board’s knowledge of that area.”
- “It involves visiting the school and meeting with staff leads to understand how strategic objectives are being implemented, how funding is being used, and any challenges affecting delivery."
- “These roles should remain strategic, not operational.”
Although statutory guidance exists for secondary schools, there is currently no formal framework for link governors in primary settings. However, primary school governing boards can play a vital role in helping pupils develop early awareness of the world of work and future pathways. At this stage, it’s especially important to challenge stereotypes and broaden children’s horizons.
